The European Union’s escalating trade deficit with China is exerting significant pressure on the bloc to find a more balanced economic relationship. With the deficit reaching €36.5 billion in July 2026, the EU is grappling with the challenge of importing nearly three times more goods from China than it exports. This growing imbalance is prompting European officials to consider targeted measures to address the issue.
According to Eurostat data, the EU’s imports from China increased by 8% year-on-year to €53.9 billion in July, while exports to China saw a slight decline of 1.6%, dropping to €17.4 billion. The monthly deficit has grown from €32.3 billion in July 2025, underscoring a persistent and widening gap in trade between the two regions. From January to July 2026, the overall trade deficit with China amounted to approximately €234 billion.
The expanding deficit has prompted the EU to explore options to mitigate its reliance on Chinese goods, especially in strategic sectors like hybrid vehicles and chemicals. The import of hybrid vehicles from China has surged following the EU’s imposition of additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in 2024. These hybrid models are subject to different tariff treatments, which has led to increased imports, further complicating the trade dynamics.
As part of the efforts to manage trade tensions, EU officials are considering voluntary limits on Chinese hybrid vehicle exports. This approach is one among several being explored to recalibrate the trade relationship with China, as the EU seeks to boost its exports and reduce dependency on Chinese imports.
Trade relations with China remain a critical agenda item for upcoming discussions between Brussels and Beijing. EU leaders are focused on strategies to enhance European exports and address the trade deficit, as the bloc aims to secure a more sustainable and equitable economic partnership with China.
