Brussels Airlines is set to implement a new fare structure that eliminates free overhead cabin baggage from its most affordable tickets on short and medium-haul flights. The change involves replacing the current Economy Light fare, which allows passengers to carry both a personal item and a standard cabin bag, with the new Economy Basic fare. This entry-level option will permit only a small personal item, such as a handbag, laptop bag, or small backpack that fits under the seat.
For passengers who desire to bring a larger cabin suitcase, the alternative will be to either purchase a higher fare category or incur an extra fee. This new fare structure will undergo testing starting April 28 for flights departing from May 19 on selected routes. If successful, Brussels Airlines plans to extend it throughout their European network. This initiative aligns with a broader strategy adopted by the Lufthansa Group, which encompasses Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Discover Airlines, Lufthansa City Airlines, and Air Dolomiti.
According to airlines, this change aims to offer more flexibility by enabling travelers with minimal luggage to enjoy lower fares. However, passengers who frequently carry cabin luggage might not experience a significant reduction in overall costs, as they may still face additional baggage fees. The new system is anticipated to have a considerable impact on business travelers, frequent flyers, expatriates, and families who usually depend on cabin baggage to avoid checked luggage fees and bypass airport delays.
Passengers are encouraged to carefully examine fare conditions before booking flights. It is advisable to compare the total cost of travel, including potential baggage fees, rather than focusing solely on the advertised ticket price. For those traveling with only a personal item, the new fare could result in savings. However, for many others, the cheapest ticket might no longer be the most economical option when considering overall travel costs.
