South Korea Threatens Action Over Ukraine’s Handling of Captured North Korean Soldiers

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has issued a warning of potential further actions against Ukraine if Kyiv does not recognize an alleged confidentiality agreement regarding the transfer of two North Korean soldiers, captured while fighting for Russia, to South Korea. President Lee also called for an apology, emphasizing the importance of addressing South Korea’s concerns in the matter.

The dispute arose after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine had handed over the two North Korean soldiers to South Korea. According to Seoul, this transfer was supposed to be covered by an agreement that aimed to protect the soldiers’ identities and the circumstances surrounding their capture. However, Ukrainian officials have challenged the existence of such an agreement.

President Lee expressed concern over remarks from Ukraine that he perceived as hinting at a potential military confrontation between North and South Korea. He suggested that such comments could exacerbate tensions on the Korean Peninsula, a region already fraught with geopolitical challenges.

Both countries have initiated diplomatic discussions to resolve the ongoing dispute. These talks have primarily focused on South Korea’s request for an acknowledgment of the confidentiality agreement and an apology from Ukraine, with both sides keen to prevent the situation from straining their bilateral relations further.

Despite the current tensions, South Korea has been a supporter of Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in 2022, providing both humanitarian aid and financial assistance. Seoul has also committed to offering additional non-lethal support to Ukraine as part of its ongoing efforts to aid the country amidst the conflict.
