Indonesia and Serbia to Boost Trade and Energy Security Cooperation

Indonesia and Serbia have reached an agreement to enhance their bilateral cooperation across several key sectors, marking a significant step in their diplomatic relations. This decision was finalized during the fifth Bilateral Consultation Forum held in Jakarta, where both nations committed to expanding ties in trade, energy security, food security, and emerging technologies.

The discussions between Indonesia and Serbia highlighted a range of collaborative opportunities, particularly in mineral exploration, nickel processing, and the electric vehicle supply chain. Additionally, both countries expressed interest in advancing joint efforts in fields like artificial intelligence, data centers, semiconductors, and digital transformation.

Over recent years, trade between Indonesia and Serbia has demonstrated robust growth, averaging a 20.62% increase annually from 2021 to 2025, with projections reaching $53.6 million by the end of 2025. In light of this growth, the two nations are considering a potential free trade agreement and are planning to establish a joint economic commission to facilitate expanded trade and improve access to markets in Central and Eastern Europe.

The forum also addressed investment strategies, industrial production collaboration, and employment opportunities. A significant aspect of their discussions focused on exploring government-to-government arrangements aimed at reinforcing legal protections for Indonesian migrant workers residing in Serbia.

Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity, underscoring the importance of these principles in their international relations. Looking ahead, they agreed to convene the sixth Bilateral Consultation Forum in Serbia, with the date yet to be announced.
