Bulgaria has called on NATO allies to bolster defense measures in the Black Sea region following a spate of attacks on commercial vessels, according to the country’s Defence Minister, Dimitar Stoyanov. On October 16, Stoyanov highlighted the urgent need for enhanced security as he revealed that four merchant ships had been targeted within Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone, with two additional attacks occurring in Romanian waters.
The request to NATO includes a range of military support, such as aviation assistance, air-defense missile systems, anti-drone technology, and maritime patrol aircraft. Bulgaria has formally reached out to NATO’s Secretary-General and Allied Command, although a decision regarding the type and extent of aid is still pending.
Stoyanov emphasized the importance of modernizing Bulgaria’s armed forces in light of the increasing intensity of strikes in the Black Sea. He also pointed to the necessity for other NATO members, including Romania and Baltic states, to strengthen their defense capabilities.
The recent attacks have raised significant concerns about the safety of commercial shipping and the broader regional security landscape. However, Bulgarian authorities have yet to officially attribute responsibility for these incidents, noting that further evidence is needed before making any conclusions.
As Bulgaria continues to assess the situation, the government is seeking stronger cooperation with NATO allies to protect crucial maritime infrastructure and ensure the security of shipping routes in the region.
