Bulgarian PM Radev Utilizes Market Tech to Ease Price Pressures

On May 8, Bulgaria’s newly-elected Prime Minister, Roumen Radev, outlined his government’s strategy to address the rising cost of living, emphasizing the use of market economy tools rather than imposing price ceilings. Radev, speaking shortly after his government was approved by Parliament, indicated that breaking the trend of increasing prices would be an immediate focus. He announced the preparation of legislative changes aimed at refining the pricing process and combating unfair competition, promising higher sanctions and more comprehensive control mechanisms against violators.

Radev also highlighted the importance of supporting Bulgarian producers, ensuring they have better market access and protecting them from coercive practices that force sales at near cost, which negatively impacts sectors like dairy and livestock farming. During the first Cabinet meeting, Radev discussed the broader goals of his administration, including judicial reform, anti-corruption efforts, and preserving funds under the Recovery and Resilience Plan. He underscored the necessity of a detailed departmental analysis to understand the country’s financial state, focusing on problematic contracts and administrative inefficiencies.

The Prime Minister stressed the significance of dismantling oligarchic structures, advocating for an energetic government to spearhead anti-corruption measures. He called for an independent Prosecutor’s Office and a reformed Supreme Judicial Council, while the government aims to partner with the National Assembly in appointing a new, autonomous Prosecutor General. Radev reiterated that judicial reform extends beyond leadership changes, as the Cabinet plans to propose comprehensive reforms for a more efficient and just legal system.

Radev’s agenda includes improving Bulgaria’s business climate by attracting investments, enhancing digital services, and reducing regulations. He also called for the modernization of the military and stressed the Interior Ministry’s role in tackling crime and drug trafficking. In foreign policy, Radev advocated for constructive engagement that prioritizes Bulgarian interests within international alliances.

In education and healthcare, Radev prioritized enhancing functional literacy and accelerating the construction of the National Children’s Hospital. He condemned the exploitation of patients in the healthcare system and called for safeguarding social payments for vulnerable groups. Transport, infrastructure, and energy autonomy are also on the government’s agenda, alongside ensuring food security and supporting domestic producers. Radev concluded by emphasizing the development of Bulgarian culture, tourism, and sports, particularly focusing on youth participation in sports activities.
