This summer’s intense heatwaves have led to at least 35,000 excess deaths across Europe, and this figure is expected to rise as more countries finalize their assessments. Germany, France, and Spain alone have reported over 25,000 of these deaths, underscoring the deadly impact of the extreme temperatures. Germany experienced its deadliest summer due to heat since records began, with approximately 14,000 heat-related fatalities from April to early August. In Spain, nearly 5,000 deaths attributed to heat have been documented since May, marking a record for the country.
France has preliminarily reported about 7,300 excess deaths between late May and July, not yet accounting for August figures. Other nations such as the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland have also noted significant rises in mortality linked to extreme heat spells. These heatwaves have repeatedly driven temperatures above 40°C across extensive areas of western and central Europe, shattering numerous national and local temperature records.
Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of these extreme heat events to climate change, which poses escalating public health risks. Identifying heat-related deaths can be challenging, as extreme temperatures often exacerbate pre-existing cardiovascular, respiratory, and other health issues, rather than being directly listed as the cause of death.
Experts anticipate an increase in the overall death toll for Europe as delayed mortality data is compiled and August statistics become available. The significant number of deaths highlights the urgent need to address the public health challenges posed by more severe and frequent heatwaves in the region.
