Amid growing concerns over travel disruptions, airlines and airports have pressed the European Union to pause its newly implemented biometric border control system during the bustling summer holiday season. The system, which has been gradually rolled out since October, mandates non-EU travelers to submit fingerprints and facial images at entry points. However, this has resulted in operational challenges, with some passengers experiencing wait times of up to five hours at border controls.
The industry groups argue that the long queues are causing significant travel interruptions, with some flights departing with empty seats as travelers remain stuck in lines. In certain instances, airlines have had to delay departures while waiting for passengers to complete these checks. To mitigate these issues, airline and airport representatives have appealed to the European Commission for a temporary suspension of the biometric checks in July and August, particularly when passenger volumes exceed the capacity of border controls.
Several countries have already encountered difficulties in implementing the system, leading some locations to reduce or temporarily halt biometric checks to avoid severe disruptions during peak travel periods. The groups caution that if the delays persist, they could negatively impact Europe’s tourism sector and tarnish the continent’s reputation for international travel, especially as airports gear up to handle millions of additional passengers in the coming months.
The representatives emphasize the necessity for increased staffing, enhanced technology, and dependable automated systems to ensure the biometric checks can be conducted efficiently and without causing significant disruptions. Without these improvements, the current system risks compounding travel chaos during one of the busiest times of the year for European travel.
