Vacations are a break from routine for us, but for our pets, maintaining a sense of normalcy is a powerful tool for comfort and stability. Sticking to their routine as much as possible can dramatically reduce travel-related stress.
Stick to their meal schedule. One of the most grounding parts of a pet’s day is mealtime. Try to feed them at the same times you would at home. This predictability is reassuring. It’s also crucial to bring their regular food, as a sudden diet change combined with the stress of travel can easily lead to an upset stomach.
Maintain their exercise and sleep patterns. If your dog is used to a morning walk, make sure they get one on vacation. If your cat typically has a wild playtime in the evening, try to replicate that. Allowing them to sleep in their own travel bed or on a familiar blanket helps maintain their sense of a personal, safe space.
This sense of routine provides an anchor. While their environment may be completely new, the familiar rhythm of their day tells them that everything is okay. It’s a simple yet incredibly effective way to keep them feeling secure and happy, no matter where you are.
