EasyJet Chief Slams European Lawmakers Over “Stupid” Free Carry-On Baggage Requirements

EasyJet’s top executive has delivered a blistering assessment of European Union baggage proposals, using unusually strong language to describe legislation he believes will damage both airlines and passengers.

The European Parliament’s overwhelming vote in support of expanded free baggage allowances represents a significant policy shift that could affect millions of travelers. Under the proposed rules, passengers would automatically receive both a personal item allowance and the ability to bring a larger cabin bag weighing up to 7 kilograms.

According to Kenton Jarvis, this represents a case study in regulatory overreach by officials who don’t grasp the operational complexities of commercial aviation. He noted that cabin space is finite and carefully managed, making it impossible to simply accommodate more luggage without consequence.

The airline executive also highlighted the economic implications, pointing out that ancillary revenues including baggage fees total more than £2.5 billion annually for EasyJet alone. These charges aren’t simply profit padding but rather essential components of a pricing strategy that keeps basic fares accessible to budget-conscious travelers.

Beyond the regulatory controversy, EasyJet continues navigating a challenging business environment with quarterly losses of £93 million offset by encouraging booking trends and passenger growth. The carrier sees particular strength in demand for North African and Georgian destinations.
