Decades-Old Dispute Calms as Thai, Cambodia Tempers Hostilities

An historic and often violent rivalry was put on hold as Thailand and Cambodia stopped hostilities along their disputed border. The five-day conflict, which reignited deep-seated mistrust and historical grievances, finally eased through regional mediation.

Ancient temples and rural lands again bore the brunt of the fighting—flashpoints left ambiguous by colonial-era treaties. Now, Thailand and Cambodia will let military and diplomatic teams guide the post-ceasefire process.

Relief agencies are providing critical aid to displaced populations, many of whom hope to return to normalcy soon. The situation remains charged, but the current ceasefire allows both nations time to address the deeper roots of their quarrels.

Future peace, many experts say, will demand much more than a temporary truce.
